Encouraging performance from Eagles ladies against Stanningley

From wrath to pride, mixed emotions for Eagles coach Powell

From being at the wrong end of coach, Mick Powell's, Wrath at half time, the West Leeds Ladies turned things around and ended the game which earned the accolades they deserved, with a performance to be proud of in their home friendly fixture against neighbour's Stanningley Ladies 'B' side, on Thursday 8 July.

There was some trepidation and nervousness amongst the Eagles faithful when the Stanningley line up was announced, and it seemed a daunting task for the Eagle's ladies who fielded three open age debutants. Georgia Waterhouse, who turned sixteen last June, and who had been eagerly awaiting her first rugby league game after changing from dance to rugby, and two player's who the club welcome back, Steph and Caitlin, who returned to play open age after last playing for the club at under sixteen level. All three joining a set of players which has seen numerous new players joining the squad this season, some as young as sixteen, with a others playing rugby league together for the first time.

The game failed to go the distance, and was abandoned with sixteen minutes to go due to injury to a player, with Stanningley leading 32-10. Tries for Abbie Benn and Leah McFarlane, with Sarah-Louise Barford getting the conversion. Top tackler Elizabeth Perrin.

Coach, MIck Powell, who has done a remarkable job since taking over the reigns, often in difficult circumstances, later remarked that the result wasn’t ours, but the passion and team spirit was second to none I raise a beer to you all!

Captain,Lucy Butterfield later said that she was a “Proud captain tonight ladies, couldn’t fault anyone. Everyone was fearless and pulled together! Start to finish we played our hearts out and set targets as a team which we achieved!”
