Egremont just squeezed past a spirited west Leeds outfit to book their place in the 2nd round draw of the Barla national cup.

In a game where the weather conditions were always going to play a part, Egremont scraped past a defiant west leeds side in the first round of the national cup.

The wind was blowing and the hail falling two evenly matched teams took to the field both looking to advance to the second round of the prestigious cup. It was the away side who took an early early lead with an early try on 2 minutes coming on the back of a neat kick through the kick was unsuccessful 4-0 to the visitors.

The game then went into an even spell neither team could break each others defence and mistakes starting to creep into each others game as the wind and cold was taking Its tool on both sets of players and supporters. This was until the 27th minute when Egremont Centre Ben Walker broke from 40 meters out to cross for the home visitors. Darren Block taimed the blustery conditions and slotted over the resulting conversion 6-4 to the home side.

This is what it remained until half time. Coming out in the second half both teams felt as though they could both win the game and on 50 minutes this belief was strengthened for the home side when out of nowhere 2nd rower Keiran Glen danced his way through the west's defence from 15 meters out to take the scoreline out to 10-4. Once again step up Darren Block to convert 12-4 to the hosts.

Never the less in what was always going to be a close tie. The spirited Yorkshire outfit would not lie down and there persitance was rewarded when on 73 minutes a crafty kick off the back of a scrum was rewarded with a try catching out the home defence. Unfortunately the kick was unsuccessful, scoreline 12-8.

This set up a very tense final 7 minutes with Egremont trying to hold on for the win and west's believing they could still win. The game was still in the balance when with the final play of the game West leeds had a try ruled out under the posts which if given would of surely won the tie and sent the Leeds outfit into the second round draw. However it was Egremont who held on for the victory and advance into the second round of the cup.
