West Leeds Ladies produce second home win

On a hot Sunday afternoon, the West Leeds Eagle’s Ladies played host to Fryston Warriors in a friendly fixture at Redhsaw Road. It was not ideal weather for rugby league, with the heat becoming hotter as the afternoon progressed, which made the pitch hard and injuries likely, it was therefore not surprising stoppages were plentiful, with medics from both teams being in constant demand. However this didn’t prevent both teams going out full throttle to entertain those who turned up to watch the game. And the player’s didn’t disappoint, at times producing some scintillating rugby, and full credit to players from both teams for doing so, and not forgetting the referee of course!, who kept up with play throughout. It all provided a great afternoon’s entertainment.

West Leeds were 28-10 in the lead at the interval, and went on to record further scores which ended with a 44-14 win. The tries coming from Amelia Alexander, Elizabeth Perrin (2), Leah McFarlane, Ellena Powell, Jenny Young, Brogan Townsley Parker and Georgia Waterhouse. With Sarah-Louise Barford kicking five conversions, and Emily Evans maintaining her excellent kicking form with one.

Coach Mick Powell was beaming from ear to ear after the game, and remarked that he was 'Buzzing' after such a really good all round team performance. He later wrote that “you don’t get given a 44 - 14 win, you have to earn it and YOU, ladies, did just that. We are very much on song, and hope all injured players rest up, and make a complete recovery for this Sunday’s game away at Scarborough Pirates. Up the “Weegles” the ladies shouted, is this the open age ladies' team 'new' battle cry?

The Eagles included Jenny Young in the line-up after signing from East Leeds, and she marked an impressive debut game for the club by going over for a try. Top hit up counts were recorded for Ellena Powell, Tullyanne Flint and Lizzie Perrin, with the top tacklers being Beatriz Furtado, Tullyanne Flint and Lizzie Perrin.

Beatriz Furtado was voted as the Player's Player with eight votes out of seventeen, with Elizabeth Perrin second with four votes, and debutant Jenny Young with three votes. Tullyanne Flint and Leah McFarlane came in joint fourth.

The squad was: Amelia Alexander, Sarah Barford, Abbie Benn, Stephanie Bryan, Emily Evans, Tullyanne Flint, Beatriz Furtado, Holly James, Kirsty King, Leah McFarlane, Kayleigh Moore, Lizzie Perrin, Ellena Powell, Brogan Townsley Parker, Caitlin Waterhouse, Geogia Waterhouse and Jenny Young.
